# About SuperDoc

## What SuperDoc is

SuperDoc is an open-source DOCX editor and agent SDK. It renders, edits and automates .docx files in the browser and from server code with full-fidelity Microsoft Word compatibility: tracked changes, comments, headers and footers, pagination, tables and real-time collaboration. The same document engine powers the browser editor, a Node.js SDK, a command-line tool and an MCP server for AI agents.

SuperDoc is built and maintained by Harbour Enterprises, Inc. It is published as the superdoc packages on npm, with the source code on GitHub.

## Who it is for

- Product teams that need Word-compatible document editing inside their own web application, under their own interface and permissions.
- Engineering teams automating DOCX generation, editing and review from server code.
- Builders of AI agents that need to read and change Word documents, with the changes recorded as tracked changes and comments a reviewer can accept in Microsoft Word.
- Teams that need real-time collaborative editing of DOCX files without sending documents to a third-party service.

## How it is licensed

SuperDoc is dual-licensed. The Community edition is open source under the AGPLv3 and is free for testing and personal use, with the full editor, Document APIs and AI tools, CLI and SDK. The Business plan is a commercial license for one production document experience, in the browser, on the server, or both, with a dedicated Slack channel for support. Enterprise covers multiple document experiences or platform-wide deployments, with SLA options and custom commercial and legal terms.

Every plan includes unlimited documents, users and actions, all features, and all environments. Licensing is based on production deployment scope, not on document volume, and no document-volume reporting is required.

## Security and trust

SuperDoc runs inside your infrastructure: in the browser, on your servers, or within your agents. It does not require document content to be sent to or stored by SuperDoc, and its telemetry is configurable and can be disabled, including for deployments without outside network access. For Enterprise security reviews, a SOC 2 Type II report, security documentation, architecture and data-flow materials and a software bill of materials are available.

## Community and open data

Development happens in the open on GitHub, with a Discord community where the SuperDoc team and other builders answer questions. SuperDoc also publishes the open DOCX dataset, a corpus of real-world documents used to test Word compatibility, at docxcorp.us.
